Yes the Tru oil is enough to darken the finish so no, a stain is not necessary but you can use a stain as an optional choice. The linseed oil in Birchwood Casey Tru Oil can naturally darken wood. Applying the Tru oil to the gun stock will give your gun stock a deeper hue. For a darker finish, you could try using the Birchwood Casey walnut wood stain before applying the Tru oil gun stock finish. A fine wood chemical stripper that is gentle on the grain of the wood would be suitable to strip any existing finish from your gun stock.
